Fungi Hunt Workshops with City of Marion

In June 2026, Jess and Sophie (Fungi for Function) delivered two workshops as part of a Fungimap engagement with City of Marion. The sessions covered an introduction to fungal biology, ecology, identification and how to get involved in the Great Aussie Fungi Hunt. We then ventured out for a guided foray to check out the fungi of local reserves. Congratulations to City of Marion for their leadership in collaborating with Fungimap on this unique project, and for acknowledging fungi as deserving of recognition alongside plants and animals in understanding, enhancing and protecting biodiversity.
Fungi Fundamentals

In May 2026, Jess and Sophie (Fungi for Function) delivered an introductory workshop at Port Environment Centre, covering the basics of fungal diversity and ecology. We also covered how participants can make real contributions to our knowledge of South Australian fungi through the Fungi for Function citizen science project. We concluded by introducing the basics of fungi identification at a ‘show and tell’ table.

Fungi in Watercolour: Illustrating the Art and Science of Mushrooms
Wednesday 13th May, 10am – 12pm @ The Summit Community Centre , Norton Summit
Join Jess Bamford and learn to capture the details of fungi through watercolour, focusing on their distinctive shapes, colours and textures. We will walk through the process of understanding how to sketch fungal forms and turn them to finished watercolour illustrations. Participants will also gain insights into the growth, biology and ecology of fungi, providing context and understanding of the subjects of illustration.

Fundamentals of Flora and Fungi
In November 2025, Jess and local botanist Andrew Crompton ran a short course supported by Hills Environment Centre called ‘Fundamentals of Flora and Fungi.’ Through formal and practical activities, participants developed the ability to recognise key species, understand classification principles, and confidently apply these skills to South Australia’s native flora and fungi. The mycology session included introducing ecological roles of fungi, building identification & descriptive skills and getting to know common fungi of the Adelaide Hills and surrounds.

Wild Webcap Workshop @ Woorabinda Bushland Reserve
In July 2023, we hosted a workshop as part of our Fungimap Spore Grant, with additional support from Adelaide Hills Science Hub.
The workshop focused on skill-building to help people recognise, idenify, photograph and describe Cortnarius and upload their observatons to iNaturalist. Partcipants were given identification on sheets to fill in on the foray, we uploaded observations to iNaturalist (of Cortinarius and other fungi), and collected some specimens to identify with a basic key.
It was fantastic to see people of all ages and skill levels come along to learn about these beautiful fungi and walk away with the confidence to identify at least a few species from this massive genus.
